"Small actions, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world."
Zero Waste Week was beautifully executed at Phase 3 of Delhi Private School,Sharjah, reinforcing the ongoing Theme of the Year: "Water." The initiative focused on raising awareness about water conservation and textile waste among middle school students through three well-planned and engaging activities. The Phase 3 environment coordinator Ms Suman has executed the plan commendably.
On Tuesday, students actively participated in the Digital Pledge by submitting personal water-saving commitments via an online form, marking the beginning of their sustainable journey. Wednesday featured a concise and informative presentation on simple water-saving hacks and creative upcycling ideas. Following this, students enthusiastically engaged in a DIY Upcycling Challenge, repurposing old clothes into practical items such as scrunchies, bows, and tote bags without sewing, effectively promoting reuse and reducing plastic bag dependency.
On Thursday, for the PA System Assembly, students emphasized the importance of clean air, linking it to the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies which will be observed on September 7. It explained the global impact of air pollution and encouraged simple actions such as walking, cycling, planting trees, saving electricity, and avoiding burning waste to improve air quality. The Water Pledge Wall activity in classes encouraged students to write water-saving habits on colourful sticky notes, which were then displayed on a large water-drop-shaped board in classrooms. This vibrant visual served as a daily reminder of their collective commitment to sustainability. A form was circulated among teachers and parents to gather feedback on Zero Waste Week.
Overall, these interactive activities successfully instilled sustainable values, enhanced environmental awareness, and encouraged responsible behaviour among students, making the sessions both impactful and memorable.
