Our Clean Seas Ambassadors participated in a very educative and life -changing clean -up trip of the Yas Mangroves. Students were taken by paddle-boats right into the mangroves where they we were taught about the flora and fauna thriving in mangroves, the physiology of mangrove trees with their special breathing roots (pneumatophores) and the adaptive mechanisms of seeds to aid propagation.
Clean -up was a physical activity our students undertook along with selected students from other schools under the guidance of trained staff organised by Yas Rescue and Research Centre. The total amount of plastic waste collected was significant, not only in the sense of quantity, but also as a stark reminder of the considerable amount of careless waste left behind by tourists which could substantially endanger the marine life in and around the mangroves .
