Recently, a dedicated team of 30 students and volunteers from the American Community School of Abu Dhabi gathered on Saadiyat Beach for a targeted Nurdle Hunt to protect our local coastal ecosystem. Traced back to a shipping container spill five years ago, nurdles- tiny industrial plastic pellets used in manufacturing- continuously wash onto our shores and pose a hidden danger to native wildlife. Thanks to our team of trained students, we successfully removed 78 grams of microplastics (roughly 2,348 nurdles), along with bottle caps and other small trash, from the sand. This effort is key for protecting the coastline as an important nesting ground for endangered Hawksbill sea turtles and other species, who can easily mistake these tiny pellets for food and ingest them. Beyond clearing marine debris, the event served as a reminder for our students that even the smallest pieces of pollution can have a huge impact on delicate ecosystems.
