Students in our Roots & Shoots program at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi are taking action to create positive change on our campus. Through hands-on gardening and sustainability projects, they are learning how small, meaningful actions can help protect the environment while making our campus greener and more welcoming.
Outdoors, students have been busy caring for potted plants in the school courtyard. They rearranged plants to improve walkways, aerated the soil, removed dead leaves, pruned overgrown growth, and repotted plants that had outgrown their containers or needed new homes. They also added fertilizer and plant food to replenish soil nutrients and support healthier growth.
Inside the greenhouse, students are exploring sustainable ways to grow and care for plants. Their activities include vermicomposting, which uses worms to turn organic waste into nutrient-rich compost, and growing edible plants through hydroponics using a Tower Garden. Students are also learning to grow plants in soil, care for their needs, and propagate new plants in both soil and water.
Through these activities, students are developing practical gardening skills while learning about plant health, soil nutrition, composting, and sustainable food production. Most importantly, they are discovering how small, consistent actions can make a meaningful difference to the environment.
