Roots & Shoots – dates for your diary
*World Chimpanzee Day – 14th July
The day honours the anniversary of the moment in 1960 when 26-year-old Jane Goodall first stepped foot onto the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Gombe, Tanzania, to study these mysterious and wonderful beings. Jane’s insights that chimpanzees make and use tools, are compassionate, have dynamic personalities and intelligence – and deserve our respect – transformed the scientific landscape, forever redefining our relationship with the animals we share this planet with.
As Dr Jane Goodall has said:
‘We are not different in kind, but rather by mere degree.”
How you can celebrate;
- Record a Pant hoot
Dr. Jane Goodall will often start her talks and events off with an amazing pant-hoot greeting, so we would love you to record your own pant-hoot and share it on social media! Don’t forget to include #WorldChimpanzeeDay #wcd2022 #GiveaPANTHOOT and of course @JaneGoodallUK so we can like and share!
– World Chimpanzee Day Webinar
Join our team of experts as we discuss chimpanzee fun facts, learn about chimpanzee behaviors and language and about their conservation. This webinar will be open to youth of all ages (while it is aimed at 13 years and older), and it will be a fun way to allow your groups to learn more about our closest living relatives.
The webinar will be held at 13:00 GMT on 14th July 2022
Peace Day – 21st September
Every year in September, Roots & Shoots groups from around the world celebrate Roots & Shoots Peace Day and honour the UN International Day of Peace. Dr. Jane has been a UN Messenger of Peace since 2002 and she inspires us all to live in harmony with nature and each other. Each Roots & Shoots project is a step towards a future in which humans can live in peace in an environmentally sustainable way—a step towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
2022 Theme: End Racism. Build Peace.
Here at Roots & Shoots we would like to encourage you to take part. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Sing the Peace Day Song
- Share ideas – what is Peace? How can you contribute to a World of compassion and empathy? Create a poster/ mural and write Peace in different languages; talk about all the things that unite us
- Host a Peace Day Parade. Make a Giant Peace Dove (get the whole class/ school involved) and Small Peace Day Doves (colour each dove in a different skin colour and fly them together)
- Write a pledge on your dove – what can you do to bring Peace and harmony? And of course, share your pledges and photos with us! We will create a gallery and inspire even more people!E-mail Jasmina Georgovska at jasmina@janegoodall.org.uk
NoWasteNovember (NWN)
No Waste November is back for 2022, and we want you AND your friends, family, colleagues and classmates to get involved. It’s a month-long event that supports and empowers individuals and institutions to tackle a waste form in their own communities and in turn create positive global impact.
No Waste November is all about inspiring action to reduce waste and to think about the effects waste has on the environment, climate change and conservation. Over this month, Roots & Shoots invites you to notice and reduce your daily waste in simple and creative ways. Even little changes can add up to a big difference on a global scale!
Keep an eye on the Roots & Shoots website for ideas on how to get involved.
Awesome initiative, great way to create awareness.
