We spend a lot of time thinking about buckets! A lot of time sourcing, pairing, drilling, washing, filling, emptying, separating, carrying, weighing, misplacing and finding buckets. It is an occupational hazard of whole-school bokashi composting.
In an effort to keep our approach sustainable, we only reuse buckets that would otherwise be thrown away. Initially our parents did the rounds of supermarkets across Dubai requesting used food-grade containers, usually from the delicatessen or bakery section.
Eventually we struck gold (well plastic gold) when one parent who works in the food industry asked colleagues to salvage buckets for our program. One trunk full of buckets later, and our bucket stocks were sorted.
Recently we also received a donation of commercial bokashi buckets from a family leaving the UAE that was unable to take their buckets with them.
As buckets break, go missing or get stuck together over time and wear, the cycle of buckets through our program continues.
