Composting Workshop

Even though most people have heard of the four Rs, which are reduce, reuse, refuse, and recycle; how many of us know about the fifth, rot? This refers to composting. Composting is the process of decomposing your organic waste into compost. Many people claim that they can’t compost because they don’t have a garden. In the UAE there is no way to compost in a community area either. But did you know that you can compost in an apartment as well?

Seeds of Knowledge decided to call TrashIt, a social enterprise that collects organic waste from the community to make  into compost. We learnt the basic steps:

Step 1: Put a layer of brown waste (paper, cardboard, and dried leaves) in your container.

Step 2: Add a layer of green waste (organic waste such as vegetable and fruit peels, eggshells, and teabags. This does not include cooked food or bones)

Step 3: End with a layer of brown waste.

You may want to add a layer of soil because the microbes are good for the breaking down process. After a week you need to mix your compost, then repeat steps 1, 2, and 3. The process for the materials to decompose only takes six weeks. To motivate ourselves we are going to have a competition to see who has the best compost and try to sell it. We would like to say a huge thank you to Suroor from TrashIt, who conducted this workshop.
