Coral Reef planting

HENA has embarked on a year-long project to learn about environmental issues and implement sustainable solutions in their community. The Junior Scientist program launched this term. Students learned about artificial coral reefs and how to use them to re-introduce coral in the ocean using techniques pioneered in the UAE. They studied and discussed materials they could use and have designed coral reefs. Then they went on an excursion to seek out a location for their artificial reefs. Students took soil samples at their proposed location, and then analyzed the soil and water to make sure the location will work. In the next few months they will build and then plant their artificial reefs, helping to reverse the distressing trend of coral reef bleaching that has been brought on by climate change.
