Tomato jamming

As the tomato seedlings planted by our Grade 1 students grow stronger and become ready to embark on their journey to the garden beds this season, we want to reflect on our amazing tomato crops from last year.

We truly had a never-ending supply of beautiful, organic tomatoes from a variety of heirloom varieties, many of which our students, staff and community had never seen before. Black beefsteak, yoom and cherry tomatoes were the dominant varieties last year.

We battled with caterpillars at times (which helped us to refine and diversify our knowledge of organic pesticides) but are immensely proud of our harvests and the moments shared over the tomato vines in our school garden.

Our end-of-season tomato harvest last year made its way into a spicy jam (with definite chutney characteristics) shared with our community in the school café.

Here’s to another season of successful tomato growing. The varieties chosen by our Grade 1 students for this year include tumbling tiger, hillbilly flame, native Indian, black bear, mini kumato and orange sucherknald. A rainbow of tomatoes!
