This week the Clarion Diggers club set up Clarion’s first worm farm. Donated by the parent community, and with worms provided by one of our families, we now have another way to keep our food waste from landfill.
Students worked together to mix coconut coir, fertile soil and shredded newspaper to create a comfortable home for our new worm family. They gave the worms a meal of well-chopped fruit and vegetable scraps, and ground eggshells, to welcome them to their new home.
By looking after our worm farm, we will learn how to create vermicompost to use in our community garden. We are beginning to see how different composting processes can utilize different types of food waste. We are also working towards creating a more diverse response to the waste generated by our community.
