‘The Etta Day’ holds a special significance for the staff and children of GEMS Modern Academy. It is observed to commemorate Mrs. Etta, whose undying passion and dedication towards saving the environment is inspirational.
For the Modern Kindergartners, the day started with immersive circle time discussions about the importance of saving the environment. The three ‘R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle were reinforced. The children came up with numerous creative ways to help save the environment, such as switching off the lights when not in use, reusing printed paper and carry-ing a poly bag to the beach and the park to ‘help’ keep the Earth tidy. Mrs. Etta’s efforts and work was discussed which received much curiosity and inspiration.
Children also visited the Sensorial Garden of the school and were thrilled to see that their ‘Bokashi Bin’ contributions had helped nourish plants like lettuce, strawberry, watermelons, spinach, mint, coriander, eggplant, radishes and tomatoes. Once again they understood the value of recycling vegetable peels in the form of ‘Bokashi’. The children found that many vegetables and fruits were ready and ripe. The teachers then led the discussion of sharing the same with others. The children decided to create paper bags made out of newspapers to distribute the produce across the school! It was a great hands-on learning experience for the children. They under-stood the concept of recycling creatively and prudently.
The day concluded with happy children who demonstrated mindfulness, awareness and great ingenuity.
