The big stink

As we edge closer to the (slightly) rainy season in the UAE, we are reminded of the dramas caused by our soil factory during the big rains earlier this year.

We have always been proud of our soil factory. By mixing old soil and building sand with bokashi in pots, planters or old tubs, we have revitalized and built a lot of soil that has been used for successful growing.

Earlier this year, our soil factory was housed in an old plastic tub from a classroom. In preparation for the rain in April we carefully covered it with a tarpaulin.

Two weeks after the rains we opened it to discover that the rained had pooled and festered. The removal of the cover released an awful stench that was carried by the breeze through the whole street area of the school – right at pick up time. This was not the best PR for the garden!

It took a while to air out and mix the soil. It was messy and smelly work but some of our Grade 2 students showed amazing grit and resilience through the process. We issued a public apology. Lesson learned!
