Keeping worms in our classroom – by Lour

One exciting day, one of our classroom parents surprised us with our new class pets—worms! We named them “Wormies.” We were excited to keep them in our class until the end of the school year. But before we could settle them in, we had to learn all about their care and the unique ways they contribute to the environment.

We discovered that taking care of Wormies was a special responsibility. We learned that they need to be handled gently and kept on a small bed of soil because their skin needs to stay moist to keep them healthy. If they get too dry, it can be harmful, so we had to be extra careful. Wormies also have a unique diet and they love compost! Lucky for us, we were already making compost in our classroom from leftover fruit peels and vegetable scraps, so Wormies had plenty to munch on.

One of the most fascinating things we learned was about worm “tea.” Worms produce a liquid (sometimes called “worm tea”) that collects at the bottom of their container. This “tea” is filled with nutrients that we used to water our classroom plants, giving them a natural boost.

Every week, we made sure to feed them and check their soil. Taking care of Wormies became a part of our daily routine, and we loved seeing how active they were each day. Our Wormies became more than just class pets—they became an important part of our classroom community!
